internet - On the relevant authorities
What really give me a good time here in China is when media, whether domestic state-owned or Western weblogs, begin about "relevant authorities". This whole phrase illustrates perfectly how this country works. In case of problems, there are no relevant authorities and you would have to blackmail them into admitting them they are relevant.
When there is no problem, everybody is relevant. No lack of authority here!
I have given up this track, but my colleagues of the newswire try to track down relevant authorities, for example when sites are being blocked on the internet - for at least a part of the day a very relevant issue.
I forgot to save the link but can recall the most recent effort, when the Ministry of Information Industry (in charge of the internet) denied any knowledge of the problems weblog host services were having. They denied they were in this case the relevant authority, but encouraged to call also the Ministry of Culture or the Public Security, then they could also be relevant authorities.
My colleague never finished this obviously endless quest for the relevant authority here. They do not want to be found, taking responsibility here is not a favorite hobby among relevant authorities.
Anyway: the search term "relevant authorities" is a favorite when I google.
