Taiwan - Elections become exciting afterwards
The narrow victory of re-elected Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian is under siege as the oppositions urges for a fast recount, recalling similarities to the 2000 US presidential elections. The margin of 0.22 percent might have occurred after Chen got wounded in a shooting, writes Katrin Hille of the Financial Times. The second democratic presidential elections in Taiwan tend to develop into a drama, as also occassional protests are being reported.
Until a few days ago the democratic process seems on track, despite the political polarisation on the island.
