media - Time complaints about delay by censors
Plans to introduce Time magazine, Time Warner's flagship, into the Chinese market has been delayed by de censorship, writes The Standard today.
Time's brand of fact-based journalism will always be subject to government
censorship,'' Time Inc president Eileen Naughton said in Hong Kong on
Friday. Any attempts to tone down editorial content to secure greater
circulation on the mainland would compromise the Time brandname, which she
sees as crucial to its success.
That might sound good, but I rather expect that Naughton is causing herself a few more problems here. Her plan to focus on India and Japan rather than China seems a clever approach. Censorship is hindering the development of all traditional media. Now, since they are expanding they can be in theory highly profitable, compared to the declining industry outside Asia. But with the kind help of the censors, erosion of those markets will also happen faster, in favor of the internet.
