You can always get it cheaper
labor - How much should a hairdresser earn ?
Today I watched in Hamburg a demonstration of medical assistants in clinics and their doctors who are threathening with a strike against proposed measures to cut costs in the German health system by getting rid of those assistants. One of the banners, carried by an almost bold German man, compared the hourly wage of a medical assistant (46.2 euro gross) with that of his hairdresser (70 euro).
I had just got my hair done in 15 minutes for 15 euro and my Shanghaise girlfriend went through the roof when I discovered later I saw one who promised to do the job for 10 euro. They would never make it to those 70 euro per hours, even if they did not stop cutting.
The German man defended the 70 euro by claiming that it included a shampoo wash, where of course very little shampoo was required.
I get my hair done at two places in Shanghai, an upscale hairdresser that costs 6.5 euro for a treatment that includes not only a hairwash, but also an extensive massage that keep me busy for on average two hours. For emergencies I have a neighborhoor hairdresser that does the job for 4 renminbi in 15 minutes. He recently caused almost a walkout of his customers when he raised his price to 5 Renminbi (0.5 euro).
Now, this is the gruesome market and fortunately for German hairdressers their Chinese competitors did not make their entrance on the German market. Now, would that be a viable business idea?
