An angry Donald Duckmedia - Disney: no TV channel, no park
Really very enjoyable to see more and more US business people losing their temper when they deal with China. After Microsoft, now Disney's new CEO Robert Iger goes into an overdrive during an interview in the New York Times and the International Herald Tribune in the fringes of the opening of their park in Hong Kong.
Shanghai has been very eager to get their park too, but Iger is very clear. When Disney does not get its own TV-channel, there will be no Disney park in China.
China has just repreated its longstanding ban on foreign participation in the media, annoying many foreign media companies who hoped that China would be opening up much faster.
While I personally appreciate when senior management publicly lose their temper over China-issues, I think this sucks as a negotiation strategy. I'm convinced that Shanghai would give Disney anything in exchange for a Disney park, it cannot give them a TV-channel. Shanghai will have to stick to the current ban on foreign media too and by going into this overdrive, Iger will get nothing. Especially now the state council has set the rule, changes will be very hard to get for at least 12 to 18 months.
I hope I'm wrong but this looks not very smart.
