economy - Africa lost 250,000 textile jobs to China
Europe and the US might have complained the loudest, but the real losers in the global textile struggle can be found in Africa, writes the Public Agenda in Accra.
During a meeting last week in Durban, South Africa union representatives of clothing, textile, footwear and leather workers from ten African countries, including Ghana it came to light that Africa has lost over 250,000 clothing workers over the past few years.
Countries worse affected are Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria and Swaziland. The rest include Mauritius, Zambia, Madagascar, Namibia, Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania.
The situation is now deteriorating faster, as Chinese textile is hardly stopped anymore. Union representatives in Africa call for a restructering of the industry, just like China has done in the past decade.
