the Buick dream

economy - McKinsey dreams on with Chinese consumers

What I like are American-style investigations into the Chinese consumers, like the one by consulting giant McKinsey I found through the China Stock Blog. When you look at the data from the survey (6,000 consumers, 30 Chinese cities, 60% of the population, 90% of China's GPD, 80% of the disposible income) it looks superficially like very great.
Chinese plan massive investments in cars, appliances and the latest consumer products. Having a private car is the biggest dream for many. A new apartment is at the top of the shopping list of many consumers. It dreams on like this.
Now, the problem in China - and it might be bigger than in the US - there is a huge gap between what people aspire and what they actually do. Dreams do not mean purchases, unfortunately.
