law - Do switch off your MP3 when you kill

Amazing stuff is sometimes coming from China's courtrooms, like this story in the Shanghai Daily.
It tells the story of a Shanxi man, convicted in a Shanghai court for murder, robbery and blackmail, proved by his own recordings at his MP3-device.
The defendant Guo (28) pleaded he could not be held responsible because of severe cases of mental illness in his family. I'm not sure whether this would have gotten him off the hook for the death penalty, but since his own recordings contributed to his conviction, I do think he has a case here.
It sounds like a story worth a book, unfortunately, we only have a very short article.
