panic after 17-death carnage at high waylaw - Accident triggers off tough measures, for the time being
Have you ever been begging to see a police man in China? Will, I have been while driving over some of the overcrowded highways in China in the evening and at night. The scenes are unbelievable and literally nowhere police was in sight.
Last night 17 people were killed at an accident on the highway between Beijing and Shijiazhuang last night, triggering off some panic at the public security departments who should at least be marginally in charge of road safety.
The Shanghai Daily reports that police has been called back from their holidays. It also reports the latest sad figures:
A ministry spokesman said 89,749 people died in road accidents in the first 11 months of this year, 7.6 percent fewer compared with last year. The number of accidents also fell 11.3 percent to about 417,000.
