internet - New tools

One of the reasons to have this weblog is to play around with some new tools and applications I can share with my readers. Two new features that made me initially rather enthusiastic, but a bit more cautious after first usage.
Jeff (a former blogger, so I cannot link to him) asked me to install some software of the World Community Grid. That allows you to spend the time you do not use your computer to donate it to medical research, says aids-research in my case. While I loved the idea, I do have a quite old laptop and the CPU started to make the same noises my previous computers made when temperature in Shanghai would go up in Spring. Very soon after that a crash would occur, because the cooling system could not manage anymore, so I removed it again. Now, when you computer is up to date and you prefer to sit under an airco anyway, there would be no problem. Jeff is trying to convince the newswire Bloomberg also to join the system, so why should you not?
Another tool is Orangefeed, a new way to put ads on your RSS-feed and make some money while blogging. That involves a new RSS-feed, you find at your right hand side:

That is also the problem, since my current subscribers are subscribed by using my other RSS-feeds. Orangefeed seems to have messed around with them, so new subscribers cannot use those earlier feeds anymore. The old subscribers are still using those, and that seems to be no problem, but they would actually have to resubscribe to get exposed to my ads. That is maybe a bit much to ask from them. I might have to look into other systems too.

Update: One drawback on Orangefeed. Initially my RSS reader got crazy because the feeds kept on renewing. Now nothing is coming anymore: will monitor its performance closely.
