internet - Rebecca's entry on Microsoft hits the waves
The search company Blogpulse reports that Rebecca MacKinnon's entry on how Microsoft censored on behalf of the Chinese government has become the hit of the day. It caused Microsoft's superblogger Scobeleizer to dissent on his companies action.
MSN Spaces seems still to be busy to get their PR-act together, as apart from Scobeleizers rant, Microsoft itself has been silent on what has become a major embarrassment.
Update: Asiapundit points at this excellent example of corporate bullshit, produced by the PR-department of Microsoft at the occassion of them closing down Michael Anti's weblog at MSN Spaces. (Bold not added by MSN).
"MSN is committed to ensuring that products and services comply with global and local laws, norms, and industry practices. Most countries have laws and practices that require companies providing online services to make the Internet safe for local users. Occasionally, as in China, local laws and practices require consideration of unique elements," the spokesperson said.I estimate this is not going convince a lot of people, including Scobeleizer.
Questions still remain over why a site believed to be hosted in the US has to comply with Chinese law. Microsoft responded to requests for more information on this issue by claiming that "Microsoft is a multi-national business and as such need to manage the reality of operating in countries around the world".
