The Russian newswire Interfax is quoting Iresearch boss Yang who claims that Baidu is the market leader in search engines in China over Google.
"It will not be easy for Google to pull Baidu off its dominant position in China because Baidu still enjoys advantages over Google in quite few aspects," Yang said Friday. "Compared with foreign companies, Baidu has more support from the Chinese government. The business environment here is more suited for domestic enterprises."Hold on, didn't I see a headline last week saying that Google was the market leader over Baidu? Interfax is coming with the conflicting information itself, so I do not have to Google for it. Keynote Systems came with the announcement last week, based on a survey of 1,200 internet users. Yang dismisses the survey, of course, since it contradicts his own assesment. So, who would you trust more? For the time being, I do not trust anybody.

The US study measured user opinions and not market share, so it makes a bit of sense.
Whatever the market share is now, I personally feel that in terms of service Baidu is not only well behind Google, but also Yahoo!
The US company has Google Maps, Google Earth, Google Scholar and the indespensible Google 'Where did I leave my Keys? (it's not yet beta, but it's comming)'
Baidu has web search and MP3 search (which Google would have except for IPR reasons). The lawyers jumped all over that last one as soon as the IPO was launched.
As I see it, all that can stop Google is the firewall. It's not just branding, it's about technology. Baidu isn't even close. (No slight on China, neither is MSFT).
