internet - Now guess who got blocked?
Asiapundit is having fun and rightly so. Just imagine who got blocked by the Chinese censor? Yes indeed, Google's censored edition of its search engine google.cn. Needless to say that the uncensored edition Google.com has no problem in China.
Google started last month its censored service in an effort to do whatever it would take to enter China. Unfortunately, they did not only get criticized and hackled by everybody in the industry, the effect seems to have been the reversed they hoped for. In stead of eternal gratitude from the Chinese authorities, they got blocked.
Since you will never get a public statement on why some sites are formally blocked and other are not, we can only speculate on why the censored search engine got censored. Of course, there is a real possibility that those who decided on what to block or unblock really have a good sense of humor.
More likely is the possibility that Google's new addition to the internet just caused what the Chinese authorities try to prevent: an avalange of discussions. Suddenly the whole world, inside and outside China, could compare the two services and that sparked off a discussion that was not wanted by China's internet nanny.
At least, the discussion that seemed to fizzle out is back again.
Update: Chris reports per email that he can get to Google.cn again from Shanghai. I checked it too and he is right. Very strange movements here, especially since the censors should still be out on their holidays. Fortunately, he saved some screenshots that prove there has been a problem.
