Edwyn Chanmedia - China's Gawker fights an uphill struggle
China Web2.0 Review has a nice, but too short interview with Edwyn Chan who is trying to set up a Gawker Media-like operation in China. He has now five blogs running, but see many, mainly cultural barriers, on his way to success:
It’s hard to find writers as no one really understands blog media.Very quotable is also his answer on the question why he picked mainland China in stead of Hong Kong for his venture:
There is no internet market or culture in hong kong. Actually there is no tech market period. Hong Kong is all about entertainment and finance now.Update: Part II is here

I saw that interview randomly, i don't think this guy will success in mainland china after i saw his blog "shuanga", say, his most popular blog now. I think the most problem is he doesn't know too much about china culture, especially china "internet" culture. The reason is that actually he hasnot too much china background as a hongkong people receiving all his education in "international school".
Without regard to technical issue "web2.0", I can easily find out dozens sits with similar idea to "shanga" but much more interesting.
By the way, as a mainland student studying in hong kong now, his comments about hk sounds pretty interesting
