politics - Why is China not behaving like a kloon of the US?
I found this article in de Washington Post an interesting read. Its former Beijing Bureau chief Steven Mufson tells those who believe that the internet will cause automatically democracy in countries like China are wrong. That part of the argument I believe too: the internet has strengthen the power of the central government, because for the first time in China's history they have actually a tool that allows them to know what is happening on a local level, giving them leverage over local powerbrokers.
What is article fully misses is how China, partly supported by the internet, is changing profoundly. China has changed profoundly, although the Americans who are still waiting for a purple revolution or general elections, might have missed that change. It shows a profound lack of knowledge what is really happening in Chna, even though the labels might not have changed that much.
