Quanzhou county hall

labor - Wal-Mart has a trade union in Fujian

Hurray, the Wal-Mart outlet in Quanzhou, Fujian province has the first trade-union in this traditionally fierce anti-union US retailer. The People's Daily updates us on the latest in this now two-year old struggle to get Wal-Mart Unionized.
Wal-Mart initially opposed trade unions in its outlets, like it does everywhere in the world, although according to Chinese law having a trade union is compulsory. In the end Wal-Mart gave in and said it would accept a trade union when its employees would ask about it. On Saturday morning the first of the now 59 outlets got its union.
In China only the ACFTU can organize trade unions and others are banned. In most cases the task of a Chinese trade union is limited to organizing an annual outing for the staff in exchange for three percent of the payroll.
