media - Jailed editor gets a rare praise
Does the name Li Yuanjiang still ring a bell? He was the former chief-editor of the Guangzhou Daily, who was convicted of taking bribes in 2004, while the investigations started already in 2002. The Guangzhou Daily, with 1.6 million readers at the time, was one of the most successful daily papers in the country.
At the time it was suggested that the bribes were only an excuse to get rid of the powerful media official, but the court accepted the accusations.
Mostly officials like that are erased from public life, but Li Yuanjiang got praised in a rare article in the Shanghai Daily, as the current correspondent for a prison paper. Of course the interview with the inmate is very politically correct:
"I should have used the time to serve the people, country and party. I should have stayed with my family. I should have kept a good health to serve the country and the party longer, but I have lost the chance," he said.He still has to serve another eight years, but is very interested in joining the media industry again when he gets out.
