media - China Daily to expand in adverse climate
The China Daily, one of China's two English-language daily papers, is going to expand its print edition next year to 24 pages,it says. Positive Solutions noted a - not very successful - effort to increase the number of foreign staff, and he hopes it will include an Italian chef for the kitchen too.
The change comes at a moment when - more at a management level than among the journalists, I noted - worries about the current sustainability of many media operations is growing. Last year for the first time in two decades, revenue from advertisements did not grow anymore. The realization that print media have a hard time now online ventures tend to be faster, more engaging than the traditional ink on dead trees, is for the first time also hitting China.
Because of its rigid censorship on print media, online outlets are becoming in China much faster popular than in other parts of the world - and also there the outlook for print media is getting grim. Would be interesting to hear more about the survival strategies of those papers.
