Rupert Murdock

media - Danwei: do not even try MySpace in China

On the happy occasion of the visit of media tycoon Rupert Murdoch and his wife Wendy Deng to Beijing, Danwei issues a warning to the media veteran: forget about MySpace in China.
The Chinese Internet is a shark tank, and MySpace would be eaten alive by everyone from Sina and Mop to Wangyou and Tudou to Tianya, Douban, Xici Hutong and Bokee.
Build or buy something locally: there are plenty of promising startups, and a few mature web businesses that News Corp could partner with.
I agree with Jeremy here. There might have been opportunities for US internet applications in China in the past, but in less than a year the competitive situation has changed so dramatically, China's internet companies might even become a danger in the US, let alone leave space in China.

Update: Ah, so Rupert got himself a dinner party and a deal with China Mobile, the mother of all sharks. Very soon the mobile phone users can download his music, says the People's Daily. Just see who enjoys this party more.
