telecom - First TD-SCDMA handset available

The preparation for the launch of the Chinese standard for the third generation mobile phones (3G) is getting serious as the first 20,000 handsets are being released, notes AFX-Asia. Most of those handsets will be distributed in Qingdao, Qinhuangdao and Baoding. Only a limited number will be available in Shanghai and I'm not even close of getting on a list to receive one of them.

Update: More news from what is now called the "TD", a much easier to use acronym than TD-SCDMA. It must have cost quite some meetings to decide on that change. Anyway, according to China Tech News, Datang is teaming up with CITCC to build the actual network.
