China has overtaken Japan in its expenditure on research and development, according to a report of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), writes the Financial Times. The country is expected to spend US$ 136bn this year, twenty percent more than last year. China is now on the second place, well behind the US that spends US$330bn this year on research.
Dirk Pilat, head of the OECD’s science and technology division, said the surge in Chinese research was “stunning”. He added: “Chinese investment has been growing rapidly for some time, but it is still a surprise that it has overtaken Japan so quickly.”
Most of the R&D money still goes into applied science and relatively little into basic research.
