I don't know about you, Fons, but the rumors we are hearing in Beijing are staggering - something like RMB 300 billion is supposed to be injected into the market, more even than the government spent on the Olympics.

Apart from the gagging issue of moral hazard - an issue which contributed heavily to the Asian financial malaise of 1997 - there is another question: how can the nation's government spend this kind of cash on what is effectively a subsidy on China's wealthiest individuals and institution without being concerned about political backlash from other quarters?

I guess the comment was meant for my take on the government (not) helping the Shanghai stock exchange. I did see those rumors on those possible new investments, but they would only help the stock exchange indirectly at best. The central government coming to the aid of investors, that might still be the hope of many who lost their capital, but I do not see that happen. Most of the weaker investors might have left the market anyway all together.
My estimation of public support for the wealthy is pretty firm in China; many ordinary Chinese still expect to be part of those wealthy anyway, at least that is the sentiment in Shanghai. It might be different in Beijing.

Fons, I've been meaning to tell you for a while now, but I find that there's an ad on the left panel of your posts (just below the link that says: mail Fons Tunistra) which intrudes into the main section of your posts (it extends into the main frame). I dont know if this is a function of the browswer (I use IE7) but I find that I cannot read a portion of your posts because of this intruding ad. Has no one else reported this? Can you fix this?

Thanks for the tip on the lay-out. I did not get any other complaints recently, but had a look at the layout anyway. Just under my email address there were some pretty useless tools. I have removed them and hope it helps. Do let me know if you still have problems in a few hours time (I have to republish first the whole site and that takes a bit of time nowadays.)
