Cover-up in the milk scandal uncovered
Do not mess around with the childrenChineseCurrents.com via Flickr Every stone seems to get turned in uncovering the truth behind the Sanlu milk powder scandal, and there is obvious little I can add myself. Messing around with the lives of children only deserves this kind of outcry.
What is telling though, is the effect the scandal seems to have on the Chinese media, who were first part of the cover-up and now eagerly uncovering the cover-up.
Danwei has some nice links to the Chinese media showing a picture in the Dongguan Times of a sweating Hebei vice-governor following a press conference. Sweating officials during a press conference: that means things are really changing. I have seen many embarrassing examples of officials talking plain nonsense and not caring at all. It seems to be different when your job, and perhaps even your life is at stake.
This is going to be a very big thing, fortunately also inside China, where a solid tradition of covering up scandals has met again the new media who do not allow this kind of cover-up anymore.
More at Danwei.
Update I: While we seem to be entering a new era in terms of media covering scandals, the censors have not given up, of course. Shanghaiist reports on how they try to stop information on the financial upheaval.
Update II: Global Voices has more on the media manipulation and the Sanlu milk powder scandal.

Update III: ESWN translates the story of the journalist who as a first disclosed the name of the Sanlu Group.
