How the Olympics slowed down the economy

Beijing 2008visiticeland@hotmail.com China released on Friday the latest statistics on its economic performance (here in the Financial Times) and many of the analysts blame the downturn in industrial output while retail went up. Both effects are not caused by the ongoing international economic upheaval, but seem to be short-term effects caused by the Beijing Olympics.
While the central government has been trying to engineer a reduction ofChina's overheated economy, because of the special circumstances during the Olympics, with large numbers of factories closing down and much of the logistics being halted, it is very hard to say whether there will be a long-term effect. Most expects seem to expect that later this year all will be back to 'normal'.
