China Telecom goes mobile

China TelecomImage via WikipediaAs an important part of the planned changes in China's telecom industry, China Telecom has announced it completed the take over of the CDMA-network from China Unicom, writes Telecom Update. China Unicom started off originally with a GSM-network, just like the number one in mobile communication, China Mobile.
But former prime minister Zhu Rongji needed at the end of the 1990s a nice present when he was going to the US for a state-visit and decided that China Unicom had to purchase also a second mobile network.
The planned changes will increase competition in the mobile communication in China and might actually put the giant China Mobile at a disadvantage, since it has to work with the still immature Chinese technology of TD-SCDMA. Investments in the expansion of the networks has already picked up after years of relative stagnation, now the move to the third generation mobile networks (3G) has started.
