Searching for Global Times in Beijing

CHICAGO - DECEMBER 8: Flags wave in the wind ...by Getty Images via DaylifeReaders of this weblog might have noted that I love to focus on those things going against the trend. So when Danwei reported on a job vacancy the Global Times in Beijing, they had my attention. A English-language publication from China that had escaped my attention, while worldwide even solid papers like the LA Times and the Chicago Tribune are (at least their mother company) filing for bankruptcy. At a time when thousands of jobs in the media are melting away and effors to set up other English-language ventures, like the Asia Weekly, have closed their doors.
The information on the Global Times is pretty limited as they do not have a working website. According to Mondo Times they have a circulation of over a million, making it in terms of volume to one of the largest newspapers in the world. Fortunately, and not surprising, Danwei tells us that the paper is run by the People's Daily. That means, deep pockets provided by the Communist Party.
It seems to be around for a while, but I did not notice much debate coming from its products. So, I checked on Google News, and maybe I have not been fair to them. Not only the good people at Danwei and Xinhua are reading the Global Times, but they are also quoted by AP, Time and a few others. But there must be another million readers around. Any reviews?

I am the first foreigner hired by Global Times for its upcoming English edition.
The English version will not be a translation or have the same format as the Chinese edition. which is very roughly a daily sort of Time or Newsweek with "Chinese characteristics" as they say here.
The English version wants to compete directly with China Daily and offer a more intelligent and varied paper for expats in China as well as people overseas interested in China. There is no website as yet because the paper isn't scheduled to launch until March or April.
Any other questions?

The advertisement has just been reposted yesterday at Danwei. Is the March/April launch date delayed, and are they in need of more foreign editors?

Are they looking for reporters?

Seems strange to be working with media in China and not knowing about Global Times. At the same time it makes sense that the English edition will have a different content from the Chinese edition, which in many ways is the Fox news of China with a quite blatant nationalistic tone to almost everything they write about. If you are amused by the stupidity of Fox News, then the Chinese Global Times is a good read, but if you are lucking for "fair and balanced" news, then you should look in other places. Let´s hope the English edition will do better.

Yes I have a question? How does one get to read Global Times online? They do now have a site at some arcane address similar to en.huawai ... but it has a low key presence as does also its newspaper equivalent. Please tell me how it has a million readers if it is so hard to find? Obviously the graphic designer is really catching the eye, not.
Is it given away as a free status symbol for the party faithful?
